Coronavirus: Virgin Atlantic to cut 1,150 more jobs

Virgin Atlantic is to cut 1,150 more jobs after completing a £1.2bn rescue plan that will secure its future for at least 18 months.

The airline had already cut more than 3,500 jobs out of the 10,000 employees it had at the beginning of the year.

The airline said it had to cut costs in order to survive.

“Until travel returns in greater numbers, survival is predicated on reducing costs further and continuing to preserve cash,” it said.

“The outlook for transatlantic flying, which is core to Virgin Atlantic’s business, remains uncertain with US-UK travel curtailed,” the airline said.

It said the past six months had been “the most challenging in Virgin Atlantic’s history”, and that “regrettably the airline must go further one last time with changes at scale, to ensure it emerges from this crisis”.

The carrier added that a 45-day consultation period would begin on Friday with unions.

To try to cut down on crew redundancies, it said it would introduce a voluntary, company-financed furlough scheme for 600 crew members when the government-backed scheme ends in October.

‘A tragedy’

Pilots union Balpa said that it hoped to avoid pilot redundancies.

“Every single job lost to this crisis is a tragedy and we are doing everything we can to mitigate job losses across the board,” said Balpa general secretary Brian Strutton.

“Despite no help from government, their financing is now secure,” he added.

The Covid-19 pandemic has taken a dreadful toll on employment in the aviation industry.

Airlines around the world have been haemorrhaging jobs, as they face a future in which fewer people travel, and fewer planes are able to fly.

And it isn’t just airlines. Aerospace firms, airports and groundhandling companies are also being forced to cut back.

Virgin finds itself more exposed than many of its rivals, because it relies heavily on transatlantic traffic – and restrictions on travel to the US remain in force.

The company is hoping its £1.2bn rescue plan will enable it to ride out the storm. But to succeed, it still needs to turn itself into a much smaller business than it was just a few months ago.

Presentational grey line

US carrier Delta Air Lines, which owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic, said the rescue plan was “an important part of protecting Delta’s position in the UK, particularly in the critical London Heathrow market,” as it vies against American Airlines and British Airways.

The pandemic has had a severe impact on the aviation industry as lockdowns and quarantines hit air travel. Airlines, airports and tour firms have collectively shed thousands of jobs.

Virgin gained approval for its rescue plan from UK and US courts this week.

The £1.2bn deal involves £400m in new cash, half of which will come from its main shareholder, Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.

Virgin Atlantic chief executive Shai Weiss said: “Together, we have achieved what many thought impossible and that is down to the efforts and sacrifices of so many across the company.”

He called for “urgent government action” to introduce passenger testing to help remove travel restrictions.

Since the 16 March it has not been possible for many travellers from the UK to get into the US if they do not have US citizenship and if they have been in the UK, Ireland, the Schengen zone, Iran, Brazil, or China within the past two weeks.

Ex-World Bank head Robert Zoellick: ‘The world could look like 1900 again

The former head of the World Bank has warned the world could look like it did in 1900 if countries don’t work together to tackle the current crisis.

Robert Zoellick pointed to the rift between the US and China as a serious threat to the global economic recovery.

Mr Zoellick, one of America’s most senior public officials, has advised six US presidents during his career.

He told the BBC co-operation was “the only way the global economy will emerge from the recession”.

Mr Zoellick, who was also the US deputy secretary of state, said his biggest concern was the escalating tensions between the US and China.

“I think [the relationship] is in freefall today and I don’t think we know where the bottom is, and that is a very dangerous situation,” he told the BBC’s Asia Business Report.

Mr Zoellick warned that “the world could look more like the world of 1900 when the great powers were in competition” if countries start to pull back from globalisation and pursue nationalist interests.

Financial crisis

Mr Zoellick served as the president of the World Bank between 2007 to 2012, the years that encompassed the global financial crisis.

As the head of the organisation he worked closely with the International Monetary Fund and world governments to tackle the financial meltdown.

“The 2008-09 financial crisis was a very serious event but we had the G20, [and] central banks co-operating. President Bush and then President Obama were part of international efforts with [then UK prime minister] Gordon Brown,” he said.

“Frankly, even China had a very strong stimulus programme and also co-operated in various ways. We don’t have that sense of co-operation today.”

Mr Zoellick called for the US to work closely with China in finding a solution to the pandemic, rather than “indicting them for it”.

Trump ‘flawed’

The person he blames for causing much of the damage is US President Donald Trump.

Mr Zoellick served under previous Republican Presidents George W Bush and George H W Bush. But he is clear about his dislike for the current Republican in office.

“I’ve been opposed to Trump from the start… not only because of his policy positions but also because of what I think are flaws in his character.

“I was worried about what he would do with institutions and the constitution and we’re seeing that borne out, and in the pandemic, we’re seeing another dimension, which is a question of competence.”

He believes that President Trump’s scepticism about US alliances and protectionism has added to Asian anxieties at a time when China’s power is starting to overshadow the region.

It is a topic he explores in his new book America in the World: A History of US Diplomacy and Foreign Policy.

Belarus: Large crowds expected in protests against Lukashenko

Large protests are expected to be held in Belarus later calling for long-time President Alexander Lukashenko to step down as a crackdown intensifies.
On Saturday, security agents in the capital Minsk detained dozens of people, mostly students, in the fourth weekend of protests.
In a separate march, thousands of women chanted “hands off the children”.
Meanwhile, a top opposition activist said she had taken refuge in Poland after threats from security forces.
Demonstrators say the presidential election of 9 August was rigged to keep Mr Lukashenko in office. Protesters, human rights activists and observers have accused riot police of brutally suppressing peaceful marches.
Mr Lukashenko, in power since 1994, has accused Western nations of interfering.
The protests on Sunday may be the largest yet in Minsk since the demonstrations began four weeks ago, the BBC’s Jonah Fisher in Minsk reports.
Riot police have intensified their efforts to intimidate and block the flow of people heading into central Minsk while detaining those taking part in the demonstrations, our correspondent adds.
Demonstrations that were first triggered by a disputed election are now just as much about the thuggish beatings and abuses that have followed.
On the eve of the protests, masked security agents dragged students off the streets of Minsk and bundled them into police vans during a demonstration. Dozens of protesters were detained.

Also on Saturday, leading opposition activist Olga Kovalkova said had taken refuge in Poland, adding that she would have faced a long jail term had she not agreed to leave Belarus.
She added that security forces drove her to a border post where she was able to board a bus to Poland after the driver recognised her.
Ms Tikhanovskaya, 37, represented the chief opposition to Mr Lukashenko in the election – she entered the presidential race after her husband Sergei Tikhanovsky and another candidate were jailed.
She said the opposition was demanding an end to the police violence, the immediate release of all political prisoners, and a free and fair election.

Last month, EU leaders agreed to impose sanctions – including asset freezes – on as yet unnamed Belarusian officials involved in alleged election-rigging, brutality and imprisonment of protesters. The exact sanctions are still being worked out.
The UN special rapporteur on Belarus, Anais Marin, said Mr Lukashenko’s re-election as president was “completely manipulated” and “people’s votes were stolen”.
She accused the Belarus police of torture, citing as one example a 16-year-old who was “so badly beaten up he was left in a coma”.
“The authorities must release all those arbitrarily arrested,” she said. “The government is waging an insane war against its own people.”

Mr Lukashenko has blamed some EU nations, in particular neighbouring Poland and Lithuania, of trying to force regime change.
The 66-year-old, whose key backer is Russia, has promised to defend Belarus. He was recently seen near his residence in Minsk carrying a gun and being surrounded by his heavily armed security personnel.

Donald Trump attacks ‘slimeball’ reporter in war dead row

US President Donald Trump has described as a “slimeball” a journalist who quoted him as saying dead US soldiers were “losers” and “suckers”.

He likened the Atlantic magazine report to unproven accusations made against him of colluding with Russia to win the presidential election of 2016.

The damning quotes were corroborated independently by The Associated Press.

Veterans’ groups are among those condemning Mr Trump, less than two months from the 2020 election.

Progressive group VoteVets posted a video of families whose children had been killed in action. “You don’t know what it is to sacrifice,” says one.

A small group of protesters waved placards at the president’s motorcade on Saturday near the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia.

Mr Trump has often staked a claim to strong support among the military, and last year Pew Research Center found that veterans were generally supportive of him as commander-in-chief, with 57% in favour. Three-fifths of the veterans identified as Republican, the research found.

What is Trump reported to have said?

According to The Atlantic, when Mr Trump cancelled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery outside Paris in November 2018, 100 years after the end of World War One, he said it was “filled with losers”.

Image captionDonald Trump did visit the Suresnes American Cemetery during the 2018 trip to France

Four sources told the magazine he had rejected the idea of visiting because the rain would dishevel his hair, and he did not believe it important to honour America’s war dead.

During the same trip, the president also allegedly referred to 1,800 US soldiers who died at Belleau Wood as “suckers”. The battle helped to prevent a German advance on Paris during World War One and is venerated by the US Marine Corps.

The Atlantic’s reporting was based on anonymous sources but a “senior Defense Department official with first-hand knowledge of events” and a “senior U.S. Marine Corps officer who was told about Trump’s comments” confirmed the cemetery comments to AP.

In 2018 the White House said the cemetery visit had been cancelled because bad weather had grounded the president’s helicopter. This account was backed up in a recent book by President Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, who has been a vocal critic of Mr Trump.

The US Navy also said it cancelled the trip to the cemetery because of rain in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act from Buzzfeed reporter Jason Leopold.

How did Trump react?

Without referring to Jeffrey Goldberg, the author of the Atlantic report, by name, he tweeted on Saturday: “You work so hard for the military, from completely rebuilding a depleted mess that was left by OBiden [the previous presidential administration when Joe Biden was vice-president to Barack Obama], to fixing a broken V.A. and fighting for large scale military pay raises, and then a slimeball reporter, maybe working with disgruntled people, makes up such a horrible charge..”

“This reminds me of the Dirty Dossier [the Steele dossier which alleged collusion with Russia], which was pushed hard by John McCain, & then with a thud turned out to be a total fraud. So many other scams also. The Radical Far Left is VICIOUS, they will do or say anything to win. But they won’t, we will WIN, & have four great years!”

Mr Trump went on to attack another journalist, Jennifer Griffin of Fox News, normally one of the president’s favourite news outlets.

Griffin had reported disparaging remarks about the US military allegedly made by Mr Trump on other occasions such as calling soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War “suckers”.

“Jennifer Griffin should be fired for this kind of reporting,” Mr Trump tweeted. “Never even called us for comment. @FoxNews is gone!”

White House officials have either denied the remarks allegedly made on the trip to France or stressed the president’s respect for the military.

What are Trump’s opponents saying?

Mr Biden, the Democratic challenger in the 3 November election, said his rival was “unfit” to lead.

“Mr. President, if you don’t respect our troops, you can’t lead them,” he tweeted.

Media captionJoe Biden talked about his late son Beau’s military service

If elected, he said, he would “ensure that our American heroes know that I will have their back and honor their sacrifice. Always.”

Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth, a veteran who lost both legs while serving in Iraq, said President Trump “liked to use the US military for his own ego”.

Khizr Khan, the father of a US soldier killed in Iraq who criticised Mr Trump during the 2016 Democratic convention, joined Ms Duckworth on the call.

He said: “When Donald Trump calls anyone who places their lives in service of others a loser, we understand Trump’s soul.”

Where do Trump and the US military stand?

There have been previous spats and controversies.

Media captionTrump and the US military: Friends or foe?

Mr Trump caused outrage by saying the late Senator John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was not a “war hero” saying: “I like people who weren’t captured.”

The president has never served in uniform. He received five deferments from a military draft during the Vietnam War – four for academic reasons and one for bone spurs, a calcium build-up in the heels.

Joe Biden received five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War before being disqualified from serving in the military because of asthma as a teenager.

Bangladeshi made Walton compressor hits Iraqi market

Walton Group

Bangladeshi brand Walton has started to strengthen its footprint in the Iraqi market by exporting its own branded compressor.

Walton has signed an agreement with Ashrqat Alnarjes General Company, a renowned electronics retailer in Iraq, in this regard.

Roqibul Islam Rakib, head of Asia, Middle East and African regions of Walton’s International Business Unit (IBU), said that two representatives from the Iraqi company visited Walton Compressor Manufacturing Industry at the end of last year.

The representatives were impressed witnessing the compressor production process with the state-of-the art technologies, he said, adding that later, they have showed their interest to be a distributor of Walton branded compressor in the Iraqi market.

Rakib said they have already sent the first consignment of its compressor to Iraq.

“After a successful penetration in Iraqi market, we will ensure our footprint in the neighbouring countries in the Middle East region,” he added.

Meer Muzahedin Islam, chief executive officer of Walton Compressor, said they are manufacturing world class compressor and its related essential components in Bangladesh.

“At the production stage, we have taken ‘zero tolerances’ policy to assure quality,” he said, adding that they have installed an international standard QC (Quality Control) laboratory, equipped with advanced testing tools and machineries in the factory.

The factory also has world’s advanced Hemi Anechoic Acoustic Chamber imported from USA to ensure the lowest noise level of the compressor, he added.

He also said that Walton is manufacturing world’s most ‘silent and durable’ compressors by using German technologies.

Edward Kim, president of Walton IBU, said it is very inspiring that more and more global brands are also continuously knocking them to supply compressors in a huge volume even in this evolving Covid-19 pandemic.

From the Switzerland based international testing lab SGS, several products of Walton have already received many standard certificates including CE, ROHS and EMC, he said.

He said Walton is working to expand its export market to Europe.

Terming compressor industry as a promising sector of Bangladesh, Engineer Golam Murshed, additional managing director of Walton, said the goal of Walton is to be the world’s leading compressor manufacturer.

Walton compressor factory has the capacity of manufacturing four million units of compressors annually, he added.

A team of highly skilled engineers are working relentlessly with the plan of raising the annual production capacity to 10 million units by 2025.

He acknowledges that the indomitable love of the people is his inspiration.

Portland suspect shot dead by police during arrest

US police have shot dead a man suspected of fatally shooting a right-wing activist during last weekend’s tension in Oregon, officials say.

Michael Reinoehl, 48, was being investigated for the killing of a President Donald Trump supporters during anti-racism protests in Portland.

Reinoehl said he had acted in self-defense when he shot Aaron Danielson, a member of the Patriot Prayer group.

It was not immediately clear why officers shot Reinoehl.

Some officers were quoted as saying he had pulled a gun.

Black Lives Matter protesters have demonstrated nightly in Portland since the killing of black man George Floyd in May but the city has seen clashes with right-wing groups.

Reinoehl, who regularly attended the protests, had told Vice News that he had thought he and a friend were going to be stabbed by Danielson.

“I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn’t going to do that,” he said.

What happened at the Portland protests?

Reinoehl was suspected of shooting Danielson during clashes on Saturday night when a large procession of supporters of President Trump clashed with Black Lives Matter protesters.

The shooting came amid fights between the Trump supporters and BLM protesters in the city center.

Tension rose after a convoy of some 600 vehicles flying flags and carrying an estimated 1,000 Trump backers proceeded through central Portland.

The video showed some people firing what local media described as pepper spray and pellets at BLM groups who had tried to prevent them from entering the city by blocking streets.

‘This is Crazy.’ A Record 2 Million Acres of California Have Burned This Year With Heat Conditions Predicted to Continue

A firefighter fights against the Creek Fire which started Friday afternoon, blew up and grew to 73,278 acres on September 06, 2020, in Shaver Lake, Fresno County, California, United States.

More than 2 million acres of land have been burned by wildfires in California as of Monday, according to state fire agency Cal Fire, surpassing the all-time record of 1.9 million sets in 2018. Cal Fire and climate scientists predict that the number of acres burned this year will continue to grow with upcoming weather conditions, including continued heat and offshore winds.

“This is crazy. We haven’t even got into the October and November fire season and we’ve broken the all-time record,” Cal Fire Capt. Richard Cordova told CNN on Sunday.

A Monday statement by Cal Fire said it and fire departments across the state remain prepared for potentially more significant wildfires due to critical fire weather.

In a Friday tweet, climate scientist Daniel Swain of the University of California, Los Angeles, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, predicted Monday’s new record. He tells TIME the prediction was not very impressive “since we were 95% of the way there on Friday.”

The state is experiencing another wave of record-breaking heat this weekend, and offshore winds beginning around this time of year—the Santa Anna winds in the south, and the Diablo winds in the north—are expected to spread fires further towards the coast of California, according to Swain, where most people live.

“All indications are that this fire season is going to continue to be worse than average,” Swain says.

With the large number of fires burning already, stretching firefighting resources, and the combination of a heatwave and offshore winds, “you don’t even need new ignitions, new sparks,” Swain adds. “These winds will push those fires in places where we don’t want them to go, close to where people live.”

Climate change has worsened fire conditions in the state, primarily by affecting the dryness of vegetation, Swain says.

One thing worth noting, Swain adds, is that huge numbers of acres burning isn’t inherently bad. “The problem is that the kinds of fires we’re seeing specifically right now are mostly bad fires because they’re occurring in close proximity to where people live,” he says. Historically, the state of California has tried to completely suppress fires, creating unnaturally dense forests that then become susceptible to more extreme weather events caused by climate change.

“The growing consensus among climate scientists is that more fire on the landscape is inevitable in the 21st Century,” Swain says. “What we want to do is decrease the number of acres that are burning at an extremely high intensity and the ones that threaten people’s homes and lives…And the way to do that might actually be to allow more of the other kinds of good fire on the landscape.”

Attack on UNO: 2 Jubo League leaders expelled

Two Jubo League leaders, who were arrested in connection with the attack on Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam, have been expelled from the ruling party’s youth wing.

The expelled leaders are Jahangir Alam, convener of Ghoraghat Upazila Jubo League, and convener committee member Asadul Islam.

Alhaj Moinul Hossain Khan Nikhil, general secretary of Jubo League central unit, confirmed their expulsion to media on Friday noon.

He said: “Jubo League is an orderly organization where no terrorist or extortionist will get a place. The arrested leaders- Jahangir Alam and Asadul Islam- were expelled from the organization for breaching party code of conduct and for carrying out an attack on Ghoraghat UNO.”
