The Academy Unveils New Inclusion Standards for 2021 Oscars

UPDATE: Starting in 2024, films vying for a Best Picture nomination will need to meet new standards set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Per a press release, the movie must meet two of the four following standards requirements: on-screen representation, themes, and narratives; creative leadership and project team; industry access and opportunities; and audience development.

To meet the criteria for on-screen representation, themes, and narratives, they need to have either one of the lead or significant supporting actors must come from an “underrepresented racial or ethnic group;” 30 percent of the cast must be made up of LGBTQ persons, women, underrepresented racial or ethnic people; or for the film to center around one of the aforementioned groups.

Similar requirements apply to the remaining criteria.

______

The 2021 Oscars are going to look different next year.

On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the Best Picture category for the 94th Academy Awards will feature 10 nominees as part of its Academy Aperture 2025 equity and inclusion initiative, which will take effect starting on July 31.

Additionally, the Academy will be implementing a quarterly viewing process to ensure that members will have the opportunity to view films released year-round in an effort to “broaden each film’s exposure, level the playing field, and ensure all eligible films can be seen by voting members,” a statement from the Academy read.

This comes after the Academy received backlash for lacking diversity among its 2020 nominees, with only two people of color—Cynthia Erivo for her performance in Harriet and Antonio Banderas for his performance in Pain and Glory—being represented in the four major acting categories. The Academy was also slammed for not including any female directors in the Best Director category.

“While the Academy has made strides, we know there is much more work to be done in order to ensure equitable opportunities across the board,” Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement. “The need to address this issue is urgent. To that end, we will amend—and continue to examine—our rules and procedures to ensure that all voices are heard and celebrated.”

Strides towards more inclusion are taking place behind the scenes as well. Per the Academy, the equity and inclusion initiative also calls for adjusting its “governance, membership and workplace culture.”

In January, the current Board of Governors participated in unconscious bias training, which is now mandatory for all Academy governors, branch executive committee members and Academy staff and will continue to occur annually.

Panels called “Academy Dialogue: It Starts with Us” will also be available to members and the public to foster conversations “on the systemic changes that need to occur in areas such as casting, screenwriting, producing, directing, financing and green-lighting of movies in order to afford opportunities to women and people of color and to help create a new narrative for recovery.”

The Academy also passed a resolution enacting maximum term limits for its governors. Starting with the 2020-2021 board term, those on the Board of Governors can serve for up to two, three-year terms, consecutive or non-consecutive, followed by a two-year hiatus after which eligibility renews for up to two additional three-year terms, for a lifetime maximum of 12 years.

Prior to this, governors were allowed to serve three consecutive three-year terms with a one-year hiatus and no lifetime maximum.

As for promoting an inclusive workplace culture, the Academy will establish an Office of Representation, Inclusion, and Equity to oversee the Aperture 2025 initiative and ensure the “implementation of best practices and accountability throughout the organization.” To create more opportunities for inclusion, Aperture 2025 will also make strides in diversifying the Academy’s “suppliers, investment opportunities and collections” through various programs that provide grants, promote diversity on film sets and celebrate aspiring filmmakers and screenwriters.

“Through the dedication, focus, and concerted effort of our Board of Governors and members on the branch executive committees, the Academy has surpassed the goals of our A2020 initiative. But to truly meet this moment, we must recognize how much more needs to be done, and we must listen, learn, embrace the challenge and hold ourselves and our community accountable,” Academy President David Rubin said in a statement. “Academy leadership and our Board are committed to ensuring that we continue to weave equity and inclusion into the fabric of every Academy initiative, committee, program, and event.”

Lionel Messi: Guillem Balague on why Barcelona ‘may not win the war’

So now we know. Lionel Messi is to stay at Barcelona, at least for one more season.

In the short term, it is a victory for the club and its directors in a much-publicised stand-off between them and the Argentine genius.

But while Barcelona have won this battle there is no guarantee they will end up winning the war – or even that this victory doesn’t turn out to be a pyrrhic one.

So why has Messi decided to stay?

Ultimately, Messi is staying because he feels he has no option and that he has been deceived by the club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who he says always assured him if he still felt unhappy with the way things were at the end of the season he could leave the club as the contract suggested.

Messi may well be staying, but this is a man who wants to leave. The spirit of his contract said he could decide what he wanted to do at the end of the season. The letter of the contract said he had to inform the club by 10 June.

On 10 June, coronavirus meant the last phase of the season had not even begun. Barcelona were, at the time, two points clear at the top of the league with 11 games to play and still very much in the Champions League, with the second leg of the last 16 to be played. Hardly the time to hand in your notice.

At the time, Messi was comforted by verbal assurances he had received from the president that at the end of the season he could decide whether he wanted to stay or go.

In a nutshell, Messi thought he had a verbal agreement, but Bartomeu saw his chance and was not about to be remembered as the president who let Messi leave.

In the Goal interview broadcast on Friday, Messi has been unequivocal about it. The reason – well, the main one – he is staying for another season is that he has been told the only way he can leave is by paying the 700m euro buyout clause the club claim is still in his contract. Or go to court. And he was not going to court with the club he loves.

That is something that is not going to happen.

Messi’s legal team have been keen to point out to their client that they believe he had more than a fair chance of winning the argument in a court of law, that – as his father and agent Jorge Messi said in a letter to La Liga – the contract says there is no 700m euro buyout clause applicable from the end of last season.

But Messi was never going to go down the legal road against the club that had given him everything and to whom he has given everything. He made it quite clear in his interview that it never crossed his mind to take Barcelona to court.

So how did we get here?

For a long time, Messi had become increasingly disillusioned with what he perceived as a lack of a project at the Nou Camp, as he himself suggests in the interview.

At the age of 33 he felt in his heart this was a club going backwards. Weaknesses were being masked, mostly by him, sticking plasters placed on gaping wounds.

Messi is, always has been and always will be a winner. He has never done losing very well. He also knows he is now in the twilight of what has been a stellar career and wants to finish it as he always lived it – as a winner.

It had become blindingly obvious to him that this wasn’t going to happen if he stayed on at Barcelona, as much as he wanted to finish his career with them.

He had lost patience with those taking decisions at the club, mostly Bartomeu, and with that also lost the passion he needs to be the best he can be.

Above all, Messi was not enjoying himself and made no secret of the fact to the club’s hierarchy. Don’t worry, he was told, if you feel like that at the end of the season then you can go.

When it became clear the club were not listening to his protestations he finally decided after the exit from the Champions League to officially announce by burofax that he was leaving the club, and that as far as he was concerned his contract allowed him to leave on a free transfer.

Suggestions handing in his notice by recorded delivery were disrespectful were way off the mark. The burofax was sent to make official what he wanted to do because the president was not taking what he said seriously.

All year he had been telling the president that he wanted to go, as he has admitted in the interview. Had he not sent it, nothing would have happened and it would have looked like he was prepared to stay for another year.

Mbappe scored his 14th goal for France in what was his side’s only shot on target

Kylian Mbappe scored a fine winning goal as France began their Nations League campaign with victory in Sweden.

Paris St-Germain forward Mbappe, 21, cut in from the left flank and weaved past three defenders before slotting home a cool finish at the near post.

Antoine Griezmann was off target with a late penalty after Anthony Martial was fouled in the box by Victor Lindelof.

World champions France host Croatia, who lost 4-1 to Portugal on Saturday,in Group A3 on Tuesday (19:45 BST).

Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo, Wolves midfielder Diogo Jota and Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix had all netted to put the European champions 3-0 up.

Coronavirus: Cheap steroids save lives from severe Covid

Cheap steroids can save the lives of patients who are critically ill with Covid-19, studies show.

The findings confirm the results of an earlier trial, which has already led to steroids being used widely for Covid patients in intensive care.

The new results, published in JAMA, show eight lives would be saved for every 100 patients treated.

The researchers said the findings were impressive, but stressed steroids were not a coronavirus cure.

In June, the UK’s Recovery trial found the first drug – a steroid called dexamethasone – that could save the lives of people with severe Covid.

The latest study brings together all clinical trials involving steroids on coronavirus patients around the world.

It confirms dexamethasone works and that another steroid, hydrocortisone, is equally effective.

Media captionKatherine Millbank spent 15 days in hospital and was part of the Recovery trial

“At the beginning of the year, at times it felt almost hopeless knowing that we had no specific treatments,” said Prof Anthony Gordon, from Imperial College London.

“It was a very worrying time, yet less than six months later we’ve found clear, reliable evidence in high quality clinical trials of how we can tackle this devastating disease.”

The results on 1,703 critically ill patients showed:

  • 40% died when given only standard treatment
  • 32% died when given steroids

The studies were on only the sickest hospital patients. Most people recover having only experienced mild symptoms.

Steroids calm down inflammation and the immune system, which is why they are already used in conditions like arthritis and asthma, as well as in some severe infections.

The drugs are not thought to be helpful in the early stages of a coronavirus infection – when symptoms include a cough, fever or a sudden loss of taste or smell.

But as the disease develops, the immune system can go into overdrive, damaging the lungs and other organs.

It is this stage of Covid that steroids are thought to help with.

“At the point at which you reach for an oxygen cylinder for a patient with Covid, you probably should be reaching for the prescription for corticosteroids,” said Prof Martin Landray, from the University of Oxford.

“These results are instantly useable; they are widely available, cheap, well-understood drugs that reduce mortality.”

Doctors are already using dexamethasone after the results earlier in the year, but the hope is that having the choice of different drugs will increase access to the treatment around the world.

The drugs can either be swallowed as tablets or given via intravenous drip.

The research so far has focused on low doses of steroids. There is no evidence that higher doses would be more effective.

New guidelines for doctors are expected to be released by the World Health Organization.

In the UK, NHS chief executive Sir Simon Stevens said: “Just as we did with dexamethasone, the NHS will now take immediate action to ensure that patients who could benefit from treatment with hydrocortisone do so, adding a further weapon in the armoury in the worldwide fight against Covid-19.”

Facebook to freeze political ads before US presidential election

Facebook has announced that it will not take on any new political ads in the seven days prior to the US election on 3 November.
However, the firm will still allow existing ads to continue to be promoted and targeted at different users.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg revealed the measure in a Facebook post.
He said that he was “worried” about divisions in the country potentially leading to civil unrest.
He added that Facebook would also label posts from candidates attempting to declare victory before the votes had been counted.
The social network has faced criticism for allowing political ads to be “micro-targeted” on its platform so that they are only seen by small communities rather than debated more widely in the days after they appear.
The Mozilla Foundation has claimed that this makes it easier for politicians and their supporters to parade fiction as fact and avoid being called out on it until it is too late, particularly as Facebook has previously said ads placed by candidates would not be fact-checked.
The new steps could serve as a precedent for how the firm handles elections elsewhere in the future.
Facebook also revealed that it would remove videos of President Trump encouraging voters in North Carolina to vote twice, which is illegal.
Any videos of Mr Trump’s comments without contextualising information would be taken down, the firm said in a statement: “This video violates our policies prohibiting voter fraud and we will remove it unless it is shared to correct the record.”

‘Divided nation’

President Trump has repeatedly claimed the election could be “rigged” due to voter fraud.
“This election is not going to be business as usual,” Mr Zuckerberg wrote.
“With our nation so divided and election results potentially taking days or even weeks to be finalised, there could be an increased risk of civil unrest across the country,” he added.
In an effort to stymie the spread of rumours and deliberate falsehoods on Facebook, the firm has said it will implement a series of measures:
  • no new political ads will be accepted in the week before the election
  • posts claiming people will get Covid-19 if they take part in the vote will be removed
  • information labels will be attached to posts seeking to delegitimise the outcome of the election
  • labels will also be added to posts by candidates that seek to claim victory before the final results are in
Mr Zuckerberg also said that Facebook had also “strengthened” its enforcement policies against movements known to spread conspiracy theories, such as QAnon.
Thousands of Facebook groups associated with these movements had already been removed, he said.
The moves have, however, attracted criticism.
The chief of Media Matters for America – a liberal media monitoring body – described it as being a pointless PR stunt.
“They will still let political ads be rerun and targeted to new groups during [the last] week so long as the ad was run and had one impression before 27 October,” tweeted Angelo Carusone.
“So, you can run a bad ad now, pause it and then reuse it that week.”
An academic who specialises in how tech and politics interact made a related point.
“Campaigns will produce and run thousands of pieces of creative in the days before the cut off so they can run the final week,” said Daniel Kreiss, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Analysis

By James Clayton, North America technology reporter
What Mark Zuckerberg is really concerned about here is system lag.
He knows the period before – and after – the US elections are likely to be toxic on Facebook.
Paid political adverts usually take time to analyse. Decisions around placing warnings on ads, or even taking them down, can take days.
And close to election day that could cause an enormous headache for Facebook, as the heat ratchets up.
We already knew of his worries about fake news and voter suppression.
But what’s also interesting here is the period he’s flagged between voting and the declared result. As he acknowledges, it could take days for a winner to be announced.
Zuckerberg has identified this potential legitimacy vacuum as a great danger for the US. He believes it could be the setting for civil unrest in America.
That’s why he’s flagging up early that anyone looking to delegitimise the vote will be targeted by Facebook moderators.
Considering Trump is already questioning the legitimacy of the election that could get very, very messy.
