Mohammed Enayetur Rahman is a Bangladeshi luminary in global entrepreneurship. Professor Dr. Sultan Salahudin Ahmed

A Brave Freedom Fighter and Physician

Professor Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed is one of the unique Bangladeshi Americans who has earned a good reputation in the USA medical world. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Larkin University, University of Miami, Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University, Barry University, Spartan University and Ross Medical University. As a renowned teacher, researcher and advanced physician, his name is widely discussed in the medical field including the Bangladeshi community.

Bangladesh’s proud son Professor Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed was born on June 7, 1953 in an educated aristocratic family. His ancestral home is in Rajshahi. His grandfather, the late Shamsuddin Ahmed, was the director of the Department of Archaeology. He was fluent in 6 languages. He was later honored as the ‘National Professor’. Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed’s father was the administrative officer at a sugar mill at Bheramar in Kushtia. He started his education at Bheramara. He join the prestigious school Govt. Laboratory High school in Dhaka and graduated his matriculation in 1969. He later completed his college degree from Dhaka College in 1972 and obtained Medical degree from Dhaka Medical College in 1978.

Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed is a freedom fighter. When he was a student of Dhaka College, the libration war started and he joined the war in sector 9. He was captured by the Pakistani aggressors. He was tortured in the prison camp but miraculously survived death. During the libration war many important and secret information of the freedom fighters were regularly published and disseminated in Dhaka city through cyclostyle machine which was invented by him. Later, this machine brought him international fame. As a doctor, he is quite sympathetic to common people. Many times, he has helped to save lives of the needy and helpless patients by buying expensive medicines with his own salary.

The handsome physician Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed used to do two programs on BTV called “Your Doctor” and “Biggyan Bichitra”. For this reason, he was a very popular figure among the audience at that time. While studying at Dhaka College, Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed Sir loves him a lot.

Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed never gets disappointed during ups and downs of his life. He possesses a self-confident and courageous mind at every moment. After coming to abroad, he didn’t lose patience during severe economic crisis. He had to sell flowers in the streets and sleep on the train.

At one stage, this talented physician got the opportunity to join an American university as a teacher. There are many achievements in his diversified life. His thought about life is very realistic. He himself is now a well-known physician, but he felt afraid to seek medical attention when he fell ill during his childhood. When he had a fever at his grandfather’s house in Chittagong, he would be given medicine mixed with milk or Horlicks.

Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed is a poet close to life and soil. There isn’t only words of liberation war in his writings but also words of land and it’s people. He has highlighted many memories of his life in the words ‘Sutor Tane’. Commenting on the book ‘Sutor Tane’, many scholars say- ‘How much the life can be bright, struggling, hardworking and creative, ‘Sutor Tane’ is it’s living example. If you want to understand the key principle of winning the battle of life, you need to read it.

Though Professor Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed lives in America but he has engaged himself with various social organizations thinking of the poor and helpless people of Bangladesh. Hope Foundation is one of them. He is one of the board members of the organization. This organization is cooperating in the development of poor mothers and children in Bangladesh. Hope Foundation has set up a hospital in Cox’s Bazar as well as at a Rohingya camp. His grandfather deeply remembers a philosophy of the late National Professor Shamsuddin Ahmed. After being recognized as a national professor, he says in the ceremony that, “What I have done all my life is not in the hope of getting something”. He said to Sultan Salahuddin, ‘When you work, do not ask for anything in return. Do the work with joy that is your life. If you expect something in return, the demand will increase.”

Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed, a friend of humanity, spent a lot of time in medical activities. He utilizes his time in teaching and serving the patients at his medical office. He is very optimistic about Bangladesh. He thinks that Bangladesh has become independent through a valiant struggle and it’s development is inevitable.

Professor Sultan Salahuddin Ahmed has set up many medical courses for medical schools and hospitals in different cities of the world through his own efforts. This scholarly personality thinks, “Life is a journey which is uncertain and unknown, and it will take you to its desired destination if you continue working for the best of your ability.”

Dr. Siddiqur M Rahman
An Environmental Scientist and
President of USA Awami League

Dr. Siddiqur M Rahman is among those Bangladeshi immigrants who have established themselves permanently abroad through their talent and qualification. He is a renowned environmental scientist and president of USA Awami League.
Siddiqur Rahman was born on March 22,——- in an educated respectable family of Baluhat village under Patilagura upazila in Bogura. He was very meritorious from his childhood. He completed his metric (SSC) from Science group at Sonatola Pilot High School. Thereafter, his reputation was spread widely as a talented student during studying at Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU). He was also engaged in student politics. Due to his excellent results, he was appointed as teacher in the same university in 1973. He earned great reputation as a young lecturer at the BAU. Being an assistant professor, he went to UK after getting Commonwealth Scholarship. After completing MS, he got scholarship to receive Phd degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey. After completing Phd, he didn’t return to Bangladesh. Then, he got an opportunity to join as Research Scientist to Department of Environmental Protection in New Jersey. After serving there for about 30 years, he voluntarily took retirement in 2011. The main reason to take voluntary retirement was to give something to his country and its people because he realized that it isn’t possible to do something only doing job. For this reason, he joined to politics. Considering his talent, organizational skills and popularity in the community, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked him to perform duties as USA Awami League. Accepting the PM call, he voluntarily retired from service and become a fulltime Awami Leaguer. From the year 2011, he has been serving as president of USA Awami League. He recalls, Bangladesh Awami League is a traditional party, which had a great contribution to the Liberation War in 1971. Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a true leader and served the party as president from 1966 to 1974. By dint of his relentless efforts and struggle, we achieved liberation.
Dr Siddiqur Rahman believes, it is a matter of great honor to him to work for a party like Bangladesh Awami League. He thinks, if someone wants to do politics, he or she needs to give a lot of time which is not possible being a service holder. For this reason, I retired from my job with a view to serving my party and people.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina likes Dr. Siddiqur Rahman as he is very honest and loyal person. Under the acumen leadership of Dr. Siddiqur Rahman, the USA Awami League is now stronger than ever. Though he has established himself in New Jersey permanently but he regularly comes to New York for organization purpose. As a result, there is seen revival among the activists of the party in New York. Sometimes, he also goes to Bangladesh for party purpose. He has sought nomination for contesting in the by-election for Bogura- 1 constituency. For this, he has taken some work activities at Sonatola. Regarding this, he says, Allah has blessed me with fame and wealth. If the party nominates me for the candidate, I will work for the welfare of the people and development of the locality which will enlighten the image of the party.
Dr. Siddiqur Rahman is an outspoken and well speaker. He gives the life to the activities of the party as the president of USA Awami League. He has also highlighted well-arranged organizational status to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit to the USA. He arranged the biggest protest rally in front of World Bank’s headquarter in Washington DC protesting the allegation against Bangladesh government regarding the loan for constructing Padma Bridge.
Dr. Siddiqur Rahman’s wife Shahanara Rahman is a social worker, who helps him in his political activities. They are blessed with a son and daughter.
Dr. Siddiqur Rahman is also playing role to bring back to bring back the assassins involved in the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Drawing the attention to the USA president, he says, “You say that there is no place for criminals in the USA. If it the case so why you don’t send back Bangababdhu’s killers to Bangladesh. How a convicted killer can reside in the USA, he questions.”
Dr. Siddiqur Rahman never judges the interests of the community from the party’s point of view. He says, “Those who come from Bangladesh are all one and alike.”

Dr. Sezan Mahmud
A Luminary and Celebrated Physician-Scientist,
Writer, Lyricist and Filmmaker.

Dr. Sezan Mahmud a versatile, multi-talented and world-class leader in public health and medical academia. He is a celebrated and nationally awarded writer, lyricist and columnist of Bengali language. Officially known as Dr. Saleh Mahmudur Rahman, is one of the Bangladeshi immigrants for whom Bangladesh can feel proud for his notable works both as a medical scientist and as a writer. He received his M.B.B.S (M.D.) degree in medicine from Sir Salimullah Medical College, M.P.H degree from Harvard University School of Public Health and a Ph.D. degree from the UAB School of Public Health, Birmingham. He also has completed his IDF training fellowship in Endocrinology at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School.
He now works as the Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medici e, Orlando, Florida. He is among few Bangladeshi who have received scholarships at the Harvard University for higher education. He is the first Asian who has received American Public Health Association Early Career Award, International Diabetes Federation Short Training Fellowship Award at Harvard Medical School and many other outstanding student and faculty awards from top institutions in the USA and in the world. He has been accorded with excellence in civil learning award for his extraordinary contribution and success in teaching and training and listed as top notable Bangladeshi-American along with many dignitaries. This recognition and achievement are not only made Sezan Mahmud proud but also put Bangladesh up high in recognitions. The University of Central Florida is the largest university in the USA with more than 70 thousand students. The standard of education and research system at the university is very high. There are 13,500 faculties in the university. In the university, 99 under graduate, 89 masters, 31 graduate doctorate, 30 professional doctorate and 3 specialized degree programs have been running. Bangladeshi-origin talented professor Sezan Mahmud is among the leaders in one of the best medical colleges where he is directing multiple programs. He has received numerous multi-million-dollar grants for research from the National Institute of Health.

Dr. Sezan Mahmud is a celebrated writer, lyricists, columnist and filmmaker. Sezan Mahmud published his debut novel “AgniBalak” (AwMœevjK) in 2009, well received by eminent writers and critics of contemporary Bengali literature. His book on the true, untold stories of Naval Commandos in the Liberation war (1971), is considered the very first docu-novel called Operation Jackpot (“Acv‡ikb R¨vKcU”, 1991). This book was translated into English by BBC journalist Sagar Chowdhury and published in Amazon Kindle version. His contribution to popularize the history of liberation war of Bangladesh to youngsters is noteworthy. His juvenile novel based on the liberation war (‘Moner Ghuri Latai’, 1992) was retold in the full-length feature film “Gourob” (‡MŠie) directed by nationally awarded film director Harunor Rashid. His writing has been selected and included by Bangladesh Text Book Board since 1996 in the sixth grade along with the most eminent writers of Bengali literature. Lashkata Ghar, a documentary film on the people called Dom (considered lower cast and untouchable) written and directed by Sezan Mahmud, has received 2014 Honorable Mention Award at the Richmond International Film Festival.
Sezan Mahmud wrote and tuned many popular songs sung by eminent singers of Bangladesh. Total, more than 100 songs are published in TV, radio, CD and other media. Some of his notable songs are Nelson Mandela (Fakir Alamgir), Bangabandhu (Debojit Saha), Kono Ek Sundori Rate (Samina Chowdhury), Ami noi shei Bonolata Sen, and Elomelo Chul (Kanak Chanpa), Amar duchokh diye (Tapan Chowdhury), Tobu bhalobashi amader Dhaka (Fakir Alamgir and others).
Sezan Mahmud is extremely prolific writer both in literature and scientific world. He has published so far 30 books in Bengali, more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific essays and continuing writing at the current moment. His critically acclaimed novel is forthcoming in English from a worldwide publisher from United Kingdom in 2020. He is married to another notable Physician, scientist and actor Dr. Trishna Mahmud, they have two sons-Tishian Mahmud and Renoa Mahmud.

A Physician and Cultural Personality

With confidence, talent, and thoughtfulness, all the enterprising women with Bangladeshi roots have gained reputation in the United States. Dr. Roksana Akter is one of them. Through her efforts, she has been able to gain recognition as a successful physician, social worker, and cultural figure. She is a Clinical Research Consultant in Internal Medicine and currently working at Arroyo Research Inc., Alhambra, California. Prior to this, she worked at the Texas Center for Drug Development in Huston, South East Texas Medical Associates in Beaumont, and University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas. She has obtained her MBBS degree from Mymensingh Medical College, Bangladesh.

While studying in medical school, Dr. Roksana was deeply involved with international voluntary organizations such as the Lions and Rotaract Clubs International. As a student of medical science, she has been a member of these organizations and has actively participated in various health care activities, including eye clinics, prevention of childhood diseases, and polio eradication to name a few.

She had a great interest in sports since childhood. She has gained a lot of reputation and awards as an important athlete in college. She was a champion athlete and awarded first prizes in Badminton, sprinting, long jump, and high jump categories. At the same time, she had a strong role in cultural activities. She entertained everyone by participating in song, poetry recitation and debate competitions. Taking part in the debate competition, she has also brought fame for the college.

This dedicated woman, who has advanced thinking, has taken part in social welfare work during her student life. She has also played an important role as an advisor to the Mymensingh National Community Service while in medical school. She has played a pivotal role in various health care activities such as child development, prenatal check-up awareness for pregnant mothers, and maternal health education for malnourished children.

Even after coming to the United States, Dr. Roksana always takes part in volunteer health care activities besides her career responsibilities. She is working in USA as a Clinical Researcher in Internal Medicine. She received a Certificate of Merit in Healthcare from Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Mark & Co. for her outstanding work in Clinical Research. In spite of her professional commitment, she spends a lot of time for volunteer work. She likes to work for non-profit organizations because she thinks that the service of the people who lacks social skills is also a prayer.

Apart from being a distinguished specialist physician and service worker, she is a creative and thoughtful woman. Although she is a doctor by profession, she is also cultural-minded. She is fashion conscious, smart and modern. This beauty-conscious individual is well known in Houston’s fashion world for her smartness, positive attitude, and smiling face. She has participated in many events there, especially fundraising events for women and children. She attended the IACF Fashion Show (Indo-American Charity Foundation) Annual Fundraising Gala in 2019 at India House, Stafford Center, Texas, India-USA Texas Beauty Pageant-2019, Houston, Texas. It is notable that Dr. Roksana has won the gold medal in recognition of Munaari’s classic model in 2019-2020. She was runner-up in the International Beauty category of USA National Beauty Pageant-2019 and runner-up in India Texas International Beauty Contest 2019. She walked on the red carpet at New York Fashion Week 2020. She has appeared in many shows as a model for Munaari.

Dr. Roksana is also a well-known music personality. She has produced many songs with Salman Ashraf, a famous South Asian musician. She also has a reputation for reciting poetry. She is a good voice reader. In other words, she is involved in all genres of sports, music, dance, song, debate, recitation, and art through good performances.

She enjoys working with the Veronica Company’s and Universal Enhance Creators as Junior Ambassador in Houston, Texas, USA. She has been actively engaged in making short films with USA Digital Media Studio, owned by Ramzan Virani in Atlanta.

There are many people whose roots lie in Bangladesh, but forget about the country, the relatives in exile life. But Dr. Purabi Basu is an exception. Though she leads a comfortable life in America, Bangladesh is always in her mind. This highly educated woman has proudly maintained her Bangaliana and has enhanced her image so much that she is an eternal Bengali. She is a famous writer, a storyteller but unaware that she herself is a story in the Bengali community. She has become an idol to the new generation in the way she expresses her Bengali identity.
Dr. Pubari Basu comes from an aristocratic educated rich cultural family in Munshiganj, Bangladesh. Her father was a well-known physician in the city. She completed her honors degree in the Department of Pharmacy from Dhaka University. Then, she moved to America for pursuing higher education. She received her MS in Biochemistry from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in the United States and her PhD in Nutrition from the University of Missouri. As a scientist, she has always been involved in the practice of science, bringing prosperity to this complex process of science. At the same time, her brilliant journey is also brightening the image of Bengali speakers and Bangladeshis.

Dr. Pubari Basu has spent some time researching and teaching at Cornell University at the world-famous Memorial Sloan Catering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Purabi Basu has highlighted many mysterious issues of science through research. She has also paved the way for discovering something new. These have also been published in various notable journals around the world.

She loves her country very much. For this reason, she comes back to the country at times. Once, she came to Bangladesh and got a high position in a famous pharmaceutical company. She contributed a lot to the advancement of the domestic pharmaceutical industry. She has also served as the Director of Health at BRAC, the world’s largest non-governmental organization. In the midst of all this, her practice of science did not stop. She kept this trend continued because she thinks, many promising scientists were born in this country, who gained worldwide fame and invented many important instruments but at that time the use of technology was not as advanced as here. So, others have made a name for themselves in that discovery. She thinks that this trend of practicing science should be kept continued in Bangladesh.
She is a famous writer. More than 50 story books and books on other subjects have been published. After her collection of stories was published in 2005, it was widely appreciated by the readers. She received the Ananya Sahitya Award in 2005. In 2013, she was awarded the ‘Bangla Academy’ medal in recognition of his contribution to Bengali literature.

Although Dr. Purabi Basu is a prominent scientist, she is well-known and enlightened in the literary arena of Bangladesh as a storyteller. Her husband Dr. Jyotiprakash Dutta has also gained a wide reputation as a researcher and storyteller. Dr. Purabi Basu and Dr. Jyotiprakash Dutta both have a profound knowledge over Bengali language literature. They are pride of Bangladesh.
Dr. Pubari Basu always thinks about the development of Bangladesh. When she hears any good news about Bangladesh, she enjoys it and feels proud. This scientist and writer is trying to advance the Bangladesh community in New York in many ways. She sincerely performed her duties in the celebration of 1st Baishakh including Ekushey February, Independence Day and Victory Day in the Bangladesh community. To the children of the new generation, she highlights the fundamentals of our history and our achievements as a nation. She thinks that wherever Bangladeshis are going, they are presenting their own culture in an enlightened way. She has also organized literacy program in various parts of New York, including Atlanta. She believes that the literature of Bangladesh is in a dignified position in the world. She said if Bengali literature is translated properly, our literary work and the image of Bangladesh will be brighter. She thinks that the strength of our patriotism will take Bangladesh to the goal of development. She has requested the Bangladeshi entrepreneurs residing abroad to invest in the country.

Scientist and Scholar

In many countries of the world, people of Bangladeshi descent have strengthened their own position with worldwide fame. Dr. Naheed Banu is one of them who is a biochemist and talented academician. She was born into an aristocratic family at Miabari under Thanapara upzial in Tangail district. Her father, late Abdul Halim, was an honest, dedicated police officer. He retired as police super. Dr. Naheed Banu was very talented from her childhood. She passed SSC from Azimpur Girls High School in 1982 and HSC from Holycross College in 1985. Then, she was admitted in Biochemistry at Dhaka University and completed honors and post-graduate degree in 1982 with top results. In 1973, she fortunately joined to Dhaka University, known as the Oxford of the East, as a lecturer.
An indomitable genius Nahid Banu has received her PhD from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 1986 on a full scholarship as she had a strong desire to pursue higher studies. In 1992, she has received a post-graduate degree in Hematology from Harvard University and later a Post Doctorate in Physiology.
A Although she chose to teach at University of Dhaka at the beginning of her career, she came to the United States in 1997 and joined Citomatrix, a world-renowned pharmaceutical company in Boston. She returned to Harvard in 2004 and joined Stomsell as a biologist with research on regenerative medicine and cellular therapy.
A very talented Dr. Naheed Banu has had the opportunity to serve as a consultant to many established organizations in the United States. In 2010, she moved to New Jersey with her family. In 2016, she had an accident while driving. At that time, she was the lead scientist at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.
The energetic and self-confident woman doesn’t like to sit idle. After recovery, she became a professor at City University, one of the leading universities in the USA in 2016. In 2020, she joined to Mark Pharmaceutical, a US-based pharmaceutical company, as a scientist.
Dr. Naheed Banu got married in 1970 when she was a student of Dhaka University. Her husband Syed Hasan Mamun also studied in the same university then. He received a PhD degree from Kolkata University. Nahid Banu’s father-in-law’s house is at Guddi in Fadirpur. Dr. Naheed Banu’s siblings were also quite talented. Her brothers- Feroz Ahmed is residing in New York; Dr. Kayes Ahmed is working at Bangabandhu Medical University in Dhaka and Tareq Ahmed is in Boston.
The couple Dr. Naheed Banu and Dr. Syeda Nawrin Nazmi is blessed with a daughter Syed Hasan Mamun who has received higher education and is now working as a financial consultant. Prior to this, she served as an officer in an established bank.
Dr. Naheed Banu said that though she resides in abroad but her roots lies in Bangladesh. She cannot forget the memories of her childhood, adolescence and youth period in Bangladesh. She always remembers the memories of Dhaka University and Curzon Hall. She says, some of her colleagues who were associated with student politics during student life in the university have established themselves as politicians.
Dr. Naheed Banu has also continued practicing Bengali culture in the USA. He has highlighted the importance of Bangladeshi culture to new generation in the community. When she comes to know about any good news from Bangladesh, she feels joy. She herself still thinks of the development of her poor relatives of the country. She has extended her hand to help establishing Bangladeshi Americans.
Dr. Naheed Banu often comes to the country and he is fascinated with the development trend of Bangladesh. However, he wishes, “Let Bangladesh be an educated and humanitarian country, where all will enjoy their basic rights.”

In this college, he was elected as literary secretary of Chhatra Sangsad for the consecutive three times. From his school days, he was involved in various literary and cultural activities including debate competition. He was awarded the ‘President’s Gold Medal’ for winning the national debate competition.
After obtaining an MBBS degree with distinction, he came to America for higher studies. After coming to the USA, Dr Atiq has completed a postgraduate medical training from State University of New York Downstate and Stoney Brook. He specializes in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Dr. Atiq is not only a specialist doctor but also a gifted researcher in the medical field. He has multiple publications on various topics in medicine. He has written several chapters in text books including several important articles in various well-known journals.
Dr. Atiq has served as director, vice-chairman and chairman of the Department of Medicine at Florida Hospital Kissimmee and the Department of Gastrology at Osceola Regional Medical Center.
He is currently a Faculty at the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine and an Associate at Center for Digestive and Lives Center in Orlando.

The wife of this talented and humane physician of the time Dr. Tahsina Atiquzzaman is an internal medicine specialist. Their only daughter Nabiha is a medical student and their only son Nabihan is studying in a school.
